OFFICE NEWS AND COMMENTARY

For several years I have been a participating attorney in connection with lawguru.com which is a site where cooperating attorneys post answers to posted legal questions.  Family law questions pertaining to divorce and adoption issues are common on this site.  I find the experience of my online participation to be very rewarding.  The site is excellent and is very helpful to the public.

A CASE TO REMEMBER

For the last 24 years I have represented thousands of people, but there are some cases that I will always remember.  One in particular involved a man charged with attempted murder after saving the life of his 6 year old son from being run over by another family member.  Our client, after saving his son, was hit by the car and pinned against another car.  My co-counsel and I took the case before a jury and obtained a hung jury which means that the jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.  We considered this a rewarding victory, but the Assistant State's Attorneys were very upset and disappointed.  In fact, one of the Assistant State's Attorneys, after the trial was over,  ran about 200 yards in the Markham, Illinois Courthouse parking lot to catch up with us as we were leaving in order to argue the case some more.  The secret to our win was having a client who simply told the truth.

LEGAL TIPS

Occasionally I will provide visitors to my website with tips on recent developments in the law as well as information on certain issues.  Recently it has come to my attention that more and more people are victims of mortgage fraud.  For instance, people have been persuaded to invest in  real estate ventures by groups of individuals who claim to have ties to  title and mortgage companies.  The problem is that many people are tricked into allowing themselves to get approved for a mortgage, without actually filling out a mortgage application.  After the deal is closed, the victims learn that the property is not in their name, but the mortgage is, and they are then stuck with property they cannot sell and may be subject to legal penalties due to false information on the mortgage application.  My advice is to always complete your own mortgage application, after you let a lawyer review the real estate sales contract and approve the terms. I do not recommend ever rushing into a financial deal.  You should know the people with whom you are working with and should be comfortable with each and every term of the agreement.
